Amphitrite (ĪĪ¼ĻĪ¹ĻĻĪÆĻĪ·), the Queen of the Sea, holds a place of both power and mystery in Greek mythology. Daughter of Nereus, the old man of the sea, and Doris, Amphitrite was one of the many Nereids ā beautiful sea nymphs who frolicked in the waves. When Poseidon, the powerful God of the Sea and Earthquakes, set his sights on Amphitrite, she wasn't exactly thrilled. Unlike some who might welcome the attention of a god, Amphitrite fled his advances. Fearing his forceful tactics, she hid herself away near Atlas, at the farthest reaches of the ocean. Determined to win her hand, Poseidon wasn't one to give up easily. He sent various creatures to find her, but none succeeded until a clever dolphin (Delphinus) managed to track her down. Delphinus' persuasive powers, some myths say, convinced Amphitrite of the advantages of being Poseidon's wife. Another version suggests Delphinus simply brought Poseidon to Amphitrite's hiding place. Either way, Amphitrite eventually agreed, and with a wedding wreath from Aphrodite, the goddess of love, she became Poseidon's wife. As a reward for his help, Delphinus was immortalized as the Delphinus constellation.
