The name ANOTR sounds like it should mean something obvious. It doesn’t – at least not in any language. It’s a construction: AN from the end of Oguzhan, OTR from the middle name Piotr that Jesse goes by. Two friends, one acronym and a sound that started in an Amsterdam attic and ended up at Tomorrowland, Awakenings and the ANOTR Scorpios Mykonos Terrace this summer – with an encore twice. ANOTR Scorpios Mykonos: who they are and how they got here
Jesse van der Heijden and Oguzhan Guney are both from the north of the Netherlands. They met, started making music together under a different name and eventually landed on ANOTR in 2015 – the year they released their first track, “Strobe,” on DFTD, the imprint of Defected Records. The label was interested before the ink dried. Industry labels started calling them “producers to watch” and “future superstar DJs” immediately.
That kind of early pressure often produces one of two outcomes. Either the artist accelerates toward mainstream appeal and loses whatever made them interesting in the first place. Or they go in the opposite direction. ANOTR went the opposite direction. In 2017, they launched NO ART – their own label, events brand and creative unit. The sound: old influences, new architecture
ANOTR builds house music from older materials. Disco, soul, funk, jazz – all of it feeds into a sound that the duo describes as finding “the sweet spot between what is made for clubs and what is made for live performances.” Their 2022 debut album The Reset introduced tracks like “Relax My Eyes” and “Vertigo” – both of which earned them a much larger following without requiring them to change what they were doing. In addition, their collaboration with Abel Balder on singles including “Relax My Eyes” showed a capacity for melody and restraint that pure club music often sacrifices for impact.
Their DJ sets are celebrated for energy and unpredictability. NO ART events don’t announce lineups in advance. Audiences buy tickets based on trust. That approach has built a following that pays attention to what ANOTR curate rather than simply who else is on the bill.
