Black Coffee Mykonos: the artist who built his own genre
Black Coffee didn’t arrive at the top of the electronic music world quickly. He took his time — and it shows in everything he makes.
Born in Durban, South Africa in 1976, he grew up surrounded by music. However, the path wasn’t straightforward. At 12, he moved with his mother to Mthatha, one of the poorest townships in the Eastern Cape. He kept playing. He kept building. By 1994, he was DJ-ing. By 2004, a spot at the Red Bull Music Academy in Cape Town changed everything — it connected him to a global network of producers and opened doors that took him from Johannesburg clubs to the world’s biggest stages.

Collaborations with Drake, Pharrell Williams, Usher, Diplo, and David Guetta followed. His album “Subconsciously” won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2022. That made him the first South African artist to win a Grammy in that category. In addition, he holds a Guinness World Record for the longest DJ set ever played — 60 hours, non-stop.
